Construction Methods for Cofferdams
Earth Fill Cofferdam
In this method, a temporary earthen embankment is constructed around the work area, effectively creating a barrier to water.
The embankment is built using excavated soil or other fill materials and is often reinforced with geotextiles or geosynthetic materials to enhance stability.
Sheet Pile Cofferdam
Sheet pile cofferdams are constructed using interlocking steel or concrete sheet piles.
These sheet piles are driven into the ground to form a continuous wall around the work area.
The interlocking mechanism provides a watertight seal, preventing water from infiltrating the construction zone.
Rock-fill cofferdams utilize large rocks or stones to create a temporary barrier against water.
The rocks are carefully placed to form a stable embankment that prevents water from entering the work area.
Types of Cofferdams
Braced cofferdams use vertical or diagonal bracing to provide structural stability. Braces are installed between the internal face of the sheet pile wall and the interior side of the cofferdam to withstand water pressure and maintain structural integrity.
Cellular cofferdams consist of interconnected cells or compartments.
These cells are filled with soil, sand, or other suitable materials to create a rigid structure.
Cellular cofferdams are often used for large-scale projects and are particularly effective in providing stability against lateral forces.
